CLAY

Clay could have kissed Chloe much longer, savoring the touch of her on his mouth, the promise of her passion. She was more pliable against him for their second kiss, less reserved about pressing against him, and Clay was hungry for more.

Unfortunately, Ryan swiftly got bored and pounded fists on Clay’s shoulder in protest of being held.

Chloe stepped back, licking her lips. Clay’s lips felt tingly and hungry still.

“Was that for vacuuming?” he asked.

Chloe shook her head. Her face was so happy and full of light. Clay thought she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen, with the little crinkles of delight all around her eyes.

“A shame,” Clay teased her. “You could have gotten a lot of vacuuming out of me with a trade like that. What else do you want? I scrub toilets! Wash windows!”

Was the joke too far? Chloe was still smiling so Clay guessed that he hadn’t overstepped.

“I should go—” they said in chorus, and laughed.

“I’ve got to get Ryan to Tiny Paws and get right back to help Raina at the bakery,” Chloe said, when Clay gestured her to speak first.

“Be good for Cherry, little man,” Clay told Ryan.

Ryan cocked his head and cackled.

Clay only remembered that he was wearing Chloe’s apron as he was opening the door, and he paused to untie it and hang it on the hook where he’d found it.

“Thank you,” Chloe said shyly, and she teased, “It’s a good look for you.”

“I’ll have to see if they come in my size,” Clay joked back.

Then he backed out of her house and reluctantly left.

He drove home in a daze, glad for shifter instincts to keep him on the road when he might have drifted carelessly off of it.

“How was your date?” Angie asked when he came into the back family dining room.

His siblings were just having breakfast, and it was bizarre how much day Clay had already had considering how early it still was. He pulled a plate from the sidebar and sat down to pile eggs and bacon and pancakes onto it, wondering for a moment if he could get away with eating it with his fingers like Ryan had. Justin passed him a fork just in time.

“It wasn’t a date,” Clay reminded them.

But it was going to be. She had agreed to see him, official-like.

“Look at that cheese-eating grin,” Justin observed. “Pretty good not-a-date, I’m guessing.”

“Pretty good,” Clay agreed mildly. But he didn’t offer any more, even when his brothers tried to tease more details from him.
